Music has always been part of his life. He started back in 2016, writing songs and recording vocals whenever he could. But like many artists, financial challenges slowed down his rise. Studio time wasn’t always affordable, and the dream often felt far away. Still, Sgqila_zk never gave up.

Sgqila_zk, real name Zolani Khwele, is a passionate new voice making waves from Delft, Cape Town, but his story begins in Butterworth, Eastern Cape. His journey into music has been shaped by real-life struggles, a strong sense of identity, and a burning desire to be heard.

Since 2016, Sgqila_zk has been writing and recording his own music. While his heart was fully in it from the start, the realities of life made the path difficult. Studio time was expensive, resources were limited, and dreams often had to be put on hold. But he never stopped believing in the gift he had. Every moment he got — he used it to refine his sound and voice.

That hard work paid off on 29 November 2024 when he dropped his debut single, SOVUMELANA. The song isn’t just another love track — it’s a raw, emotional message to his partner, a promise that he’s in it for real. He speaks with intention, expressing his commitment, even referencing how he’d go to the umfundisi with her to do things right. It’s the kind of honesty that’s rare and refreshing.

Listeners connected immediately. His voice is unique, but what truly stands out is his truth. There’s no need to pretend, no trends to chase — just heartfelt music grounded in life and love.

Beyond romance, he’s not afraid to speak out. He recently shared a message that echoes beyond the music scene:

“Sgqila_zk uzokhupha entle ngoma ngalento yenzekayo ezweni lobulawa kwamanina. Igala layo lithi enough (kwanele). Akahambi yedwa — uhamba nemvumi eyaziyo inyange lesihobe. Simbone uthi uba singasebenza sonke, singayilwa lemfazwe yobulawa kwamanina.” ✊

With that, it’s clear — Sgqila_zk’s voice isn’t just for the charts. It’s for the people.
